Which Credit Bureau Does Capital One Use?

Capital One usually checks all three credit bureaus. In SmartDispute’s data, Capital One was the one major lender that routinely pulled Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion for the same application, often on the same day. That’s why a single Capital One application can leave three hard inquiries instead of one.

Capital One also shows up under more names than most lenders: CAPITAL ONE, CAP ONE NA, CAPITAL ONE BANK USA, COAF for auto loans, CAP ONE VIA DEALER, and store cards like KOHLS/CAPONE. This guide explains each version, how Capital One’s credit checks work, and what to do if you don’t recognize one.

Key Takeaways

  • Capital One splits its inquiries almost evenly across the three bureaus: TransUnion 34%, Experian 34%, and Equifax 31% in SmartDispute’s data.
  • Two out of three Capital One applications showed up on all three bureaus on the same day.
  • COAF stands for Capital One Auto Finance. CAP ONE VIA DEALER means a car dealer sent your financing application to Capital One.
  • Capital One was the most common name in the inquiry section, appearing for more than half of members.
  • A Capital One inquiry you can’t explain should be disputed with Capital One first, then with the credit bureau.

Which Credit Bureau Does Capital One Use?

Capital One doesn’t publish which bureau it checks for a given application. But SmartDispute’s de-identified data on 14,326 hard inquiries from 590 members, who each had reports from all three bureaus (inquiries dated January 2023 through September 2026), shows a pattern unlike any other large lender:

Credit bureau Share of Capital One inquiries
TransUnion 34%
Experian 34%
Equifax 31%

The even split isn’t Capital One rotating between bureaus. It’s Capital One checking all three at once:

  • Two out of three Capital One applications (66%) appeared on all three bureaus on the same day, and 85% appeared on at least two.
  • Of the 315 members with a Capital One inquiry, 82% saw it on all three reports. For every other lender in the top 20, that figure was 12% or less.
  • The pattern held for both credit cards and auto loans.
  • Capital One accounted for 13% of all the hard inquiries in our data, more than any other lender, and appeared for 53% of members.

Chase and Citi, for example, appeared on all three reports for fewer than 3% of their members. If you’re comparing lenders, expect a Capital One application to touch every report you have.

These are patterns, not rules. Capital One can check fewer bureaus, and your own reports are the only reliable record of where an inquiry appears.

How Capital One Appears on Each Credit Report

Each credit bureau shows Capital One’s name differently, so the same application can look like three different companies. These are the versions that appeared most often in SmartDispute’s data:

Type Experian Equifax TransUnion
Credit card CAP ONE NA CAPITAL ONE BANK USA CAPITAL ONE
Auto loan CAPITAL ONE AUTO FIN or CAPONEAUTO CAPITAL ONE AUTO FIN or CAP ONE VIA DEALER COAF or CAPONEAUTO

CAPITAL ONE by itself can appear on any of the three reports. In all, Capital One appeared under 25 different names in our data.

Capital One also issues store cards, and those inquiries usually name the store. According to WalletHub’s list of Capital One store cards, the issuer’s partners include Kohl’s, Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s, Menards, Neiman Marcus, and Saks Fifth Avenue. On a credit report they look like KOHLS/CAPONE, CAP1/BASS, CAP1/CBELA (Cabela’s), CAP1/MNRDS or MENARDS/CAPITAL ONE, and CAP1/NEIMN (Neiman Marcus).

Two other names come up. CAP1/WMT is the old Capital One Walmart card; that partnership ended, and Walmart’s new card comes from Synchrony. And Discover now belongs to Capital One, which completed the acquisition in May 2025, but Discover inquiries still appear under Discover’s own name.

What Is COAF on My Credit Report?

COAF stands for Capital One Auto Finance, Capital One’s car loan business. It appears as an account if you have a Capital One auto loan, and as an inquiry if you or a dealership applied for one. TransUnion usually shows it as COAF, Experian usually spells it out as CAPITAL ONE AUTO FIN, and Equifax most often shows CAP ONE VIA DEALER.

CAP ONE VIA DEALER means a car dealer sent your financing application to Capital One. Dealers often send one application to several lenders at once, so a CAP ONE VIA DEALER inquiry usually sits next to inquiries from other auto lenders on the same date. In our data, 101 members (17%) had a Capital One auto inquiry, and 64 had one marked VIA DEALER.

Scoring models account for car shopping. FICO counts multiple auto loan inquiries within a 45-day window (14 days for older versions) as one, and VantageScore groups them within 14 days. Our guide to how hard inquiries affect your credit score explains the details.

Is a Capital One Inquiry Legitimate?

Usually, yes. A hard inquiry from Capital One normally means you applied for a Capital One card, an auto loan, or a store card Capital One issues, or a dealer sent your application to Capital One. Applying gives Capital One a permissible purpose to check your credit.

Two things often make a legitimate Capital One inquiry look suspicious:

  • Three inquiries for one application. If you see Capital One on all three reports with the same date, it’s most likely one application that Capital One checked at every bureau. All three come from the same permissible purpose.
  • Different names on each report. CAP ONE NA on Experian, CAPITAL ONE BANK USA on Equifax, and CAPITAL ONE on TransUnion can all be the same card application.

Not every Capital One credit check is a hard inquiry. If you already have a Capital One account, Capital One may review your report to manage it. Those account reviews are soft inquiries: they appear only in your own copy of the report and don’t affect your score.

A Capital One hard inquiry deserves a closer look when:

  • You don’t remember applying for any Capital One card, auto loan, or store card around that date.
  • It’s a COAF or CAP ONE VIA DEALER inquiry and you never asked a dealership for financing.
  • The same inquiry appears more than once on the same bureau, on different dates, for one application.
  • You believe someone may have applied in your name.

How to Dispute a Capital One Inquiry

Inquiries follow a different order than other credit report disputes. Start with Capital One, then involve the credit bureau.

  1. Write to Capital One first. Send your letter to the address the credit bureau lists with the inquiry on your credit report. Ask Capital One to identify the application behind the inquiry, including the dealer if it was an auto inquiry, and the permissible purpose it relied on. Don’t include ID or your Social Security number.
  2. Wait 35 days from the date you mailed it.
  3. Dispute with each credit bureau reporting the inquiry if Capital One doesn’t respond or can’t connect the inquiry to you. Attach a copy of your letter to Capital One as an exhibit.
  4. Follow up if the bureau’s result comes back “verified” without addressing why Capital One pulled your report.

Because Capital One usually checks all three bureaus, an inquiry you didn’t authorize is likely on all three reports. One letter to Capital One can cover all of them; list each report and date where it appears. Then dispute with each bureau separately if needed.

One more catch: in our data, 57% of Capital One inquiries on Equifax listed no address. If your Equifax report shows none, use the address from your Experian or TransUnion report for the same date.

The letters for each step are in Free Inquiry Dispute Letters That Work, and we explain why this order works in How to Remove Hard Inquiries From Your Credit Report.

If you’re certain the inquiry came from identity theft, there’s a faster route: an identity theft report and a block under Section 605B of the FCRA, which we cover in our guide to permissible purpose.

How to Dispute a Capital One Account

If a Capital One account on your report has incorrect information, the approach is different from an inquiry: dispute with Capital One and with each credit bureau reporting the error at the same time.

Check these details against your own statements and records:

  • Payment history: late payments that don’t match your records, or late payments reported after the account was closed or paid off.
  • Balance and credit limit: a balance reported after you paid the card off, or a credit limit that’s wrong, which can distort your utilization.
  • Auto loans: a balance still reported after the car was paid off, traded in, or refinanced, or late payments from a month you have proof you paid.
  • Dates: the date opened, date closed, and date of first delinquency. An incorrect date of first delinquency can change how long a negative item stays on your report.
  • Duplicates: the same account listed twice under two Capital One names.

When you dispute, identify the account (a partial account number is enough), state exactly what is wrong, say what the correct information is, and include copies of the statements or letters that support it.

Ask Capital One for the records behind what it reports: the payment history for the months in question, the date of first delinquency, and any record of the account being closed, transferred, or paid.

Frequently Asked Questions About Capital One

Which credit bureau does Capital One use?

Usually all three. In SmartDispute’s data, Capital One inquiries split almost evenly (TransUnion 34%, Experian 34%, Equifax 31%), and two out of three applications appeared on all three bureaus on the same day.

Why do I have three Capital One inquiries for one application?

Capital One often checks Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion for the same application. Each check is recorded by the bureau that provided it, so one application can leave an inquiry on each report.

What is COAF on my credit report?

COAF is Capital One Auto Finance, Capital One’s car loan business. It appears if you have a Capital One auto loan or if a dealership sent your financing application to Capital One.

What does CAP ONE VIA DEALER mean?

A car dealer submitted your financing application to Capital One. It usually appears alongside inquiries from other auto lenders on the same date, because dealers often send one application to several lenders.

What is CAP ONE NA?

Capital One, N.A., Capital One’s national bank. Experian often lists Capital One card inquiries this way, while Equifax shows CAPITAL ONE BANK USA and TransUnion shows CAPITAL ONE.

Can I remove a Capital One inquiry from my credit report?

A legitimate inquiry generally stays on your report. Hard inquiries remain for up to two years, and FICO counts them for only 12 months. If the inquiry can’t be connected to an application you made, you have the right to dispute it, starting with Capital One.

The Bottom Line

Capital One is the lender most likely to show up on all three of your credit reports at once. Most of the time that’s one application, checked three ways, under three slightly different names.

When it isn’t, the path depends on what you’re looking at. For an inquiry you can’t explain, ask Capital One first and take the answer to each credit bureau that reports it. For an account with errors, dispute with Capital One and the bureau together, with your records in hand.

SmartDispute.ai’s AI credit repair tools read your actual credit reports, so you can see every Capital One entry across all three bureaus, decide which ones deserve a closer look, and prepare the right letter for each.
